MISSON
The mission of the Assistive Robotics Laboratory is to develop agile, versatile wearable robots to assist humans across daily activities. The overall research themes can be classified into the following aims:
- Human-in-the-Loop Control and Optimization Frameworks for Task-Invariant Assistance
- Development of User-Friendly Wearable Devices
- Experimetanl Validation and Biomechanics Study
WE ARE HIRING: (updated Jan 20, 2025):
The ARL has a PhD opening in the development of modular, highly backdrivable lower-limb exoskeletons. Interested applicants should email to Prof. Ge Lv (glv@clemson.edu) with a CV, transcripts, an one-page cover letter, and any relevant publications.
- Required Qualification:
- Self-motivated with passion for research.
- BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related areas.
- Proficient programming skills in C/C++, Python, and Matlab.
- Proficient in using joint encoders, inertial measurement units, BLDC motors, and their drivers.
- Prior experiences in mechatronics design.
- Preferred Qualification:
- Knowledge in control systems design and analysis, robot dynamics, and optimization/machine learning.
- Experiences with using motion capture systems and electromyography sensors for gait analyses.
- Good communication, presentation, and writing skills.

- 05/2024:
- Our paper entitled “Safety Augmentation for Volitional Human Locomotion via Lower-Limb Exoskeletons: A Case Study” was accepted to IEEE Control Systems Letters!
- 04/2024:
Dr. Lv was awarded the ME Excellence Award (Junior Rank Faculty)!
- Our Creative Inquiry team presented at the 19th Annual Focus on Creative Inquiry Poster Forum!
- Our paper entitled “Soft Robotics for Fall Mitigation: Preliminary Design and Evaluation of a Wearable System using Continuum Robots” was accepted to 2024 6th International Conference on Reconfigurable Mechanisms and Robots, Chicago, IL.
- 03/2024:
Our lab receives the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation! Many thanks to NSF for supporting our research.
Our paper enetitiled “The Claw: An Avian-Inspired, Large Scale, Hybrid Rigid-Continuum Gripper]” was accepted into the speicial issue “Intelligent Bionic Robots” of Robotics (MDPI) as cover article! This is a collobration work with Prof. Ian Walker at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Clemson University.
07/2023: Our paper entitled “A Two-Layer Human-in-the-Loop Optimization Framework for Customizing Lower-Limb Exoskeleton Assistance” was published at the invited session “Recent Advancement of Human Autonomy Interaction & Integration” of the 2023 American Control Conference, San Diego, CA.
- 04/2023:

- Dr. Lv was recognized as Faculty Scholar at the School of Health Research, Clemson University.

- 12/2022: Our paper entitled “Task-Invariant Centroidal Momentum Shaping for Lower-Limb Exoskeletons” was published at the 61st Conference on Decision and Control.
- 04/2021: Dr. Lv receives the South Carolina Translational Research Improving Musculoskeletal Health (SC TRIMH) targeted junior faculty award.
- 01/2020: Dr. Lv joined the Mechanical Engineering department at Clemson University as an Assistant Professor.
